Its creators estimate that the device allows reducing CO2 emissions by 35%  

Spain is currently suffering from a severe drought. The data are very alarming in spite of the last rain, and not only last year’s problem, but it also comes from a long time ago. This scenario was worsened by climate change and population growth.

This problem has provided two Valencia plumbers with a business opportunity to combat wastewater. An idea which was born “by observing the daily waste of water in all homes and companies,” says the company.

Smartwater’s bet, which is the company’s name, makes it possible to develop a system which saves up to 40 %. Rafael Rodrigo and Francisco Pelegero have decided to create a system that prevents waste from occurring when the tap or shower is opened to warm out.

It is now under the supervision of the IDI company, created specifically for this purpose that they patented the invention in 2011. “They are waste between 8 and 15 liters in approximately that minute when we are waiting for the hot water. It doesn’t catch our attention as we do this our whole life and see it to be normal,” says Rafael Rodrigo.

By pressing a button, “without wasting one drop it is possible to have hot water at any point,” they said. The product saves around 40,6% of total water consumption. Furthermore, energy consumption savings are achieved. Total saving of energy can be approximately 33.8 %. “The declaration also states that it reduces emissions of CO2 by up to 34,8 %.” All savings data are supported in the Technical Assessment Report carried out by the Universitat Politècnica of València-Campus de Gandía’s Physical Technologies Centre.

The equipment created by these two plumbers is able to store water and dispose of it at a certain temperature to “no loss of all the cold water in the plant up to the hot water.”

Through a control system the water temperature is controlled by SmartWater, and it is accumulated in a tank if it is not at the temperature required. The system warns the user that the warm water is ready when the desired temperature is reached. “When there’s a demand for cold water it is supplied to the reservoir,” say the Smartwater creators.
