Barcelona’s disappointing end to the 2018/19 season could be the fuel that motivates Lionel Messi even more than usual as he seeks a first major trophy with Argentina at the Copa America.
The No.10 did his part, but his team still suffered elimination in the Champions League semi-finals and a defeat in the Copa del Rey final.
With 36 league goals during the season and a sixth European Golden Shoe, he has been playing well and is in good form, but there is a hunger to turn his production into more silverware.
Messi announced at the beginning of the season that winning the Champions League was his main goal for the campaign, but Barcelona’s collapse at Anfield in the second leg of their semi-final denied him the chance to contest the final in Madrid.
Making the month of May even worse was the fact that the Blaugrana then fell to a 2-1 loss in the Copa del Rey final against Valencia.
Messi will, therefore, arrive at the Copa America in Brazil with something to prove.
He returned for Argentina in March and, although that friendly loss to Venezuela wasn’t a positive, he’ll know that the Albiceleste will be one of the favourites for the tournament when it starts on June 14.
