According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), about five million Spaniards live alone, and the vast majority are people over 65, the semi-humanoid device is programmed to help the elderly at home.

By Autonomous Communities, Asturias, Castilla y León, and La Rioja are the ones with the highest percentage of single-person households. Technology has become an ally to help older people perform their daily tasks and monitor older adults’ day-to-day lives.

This is the summary of PAL Robotics ‘ Catalan project, which developed a semi-humanoid robot capable of providing the pills when they touch, monitoring vital signs and physical condition, and locating them the keys or the mobile.

Tiago, which is the device’s name, can accompany people who are sick or dependent and are notified of the time to eat. Furthermore, the robot is also prepared to recommend healthy dishes, carry objects and monitor the vital signs of the elderly “The robot allows the elderly to stay longer at home” rather than going to a center or residence as it extends the period of their autonomy on average between 2 and 3 years, says Francesco Ferro to the EFE agency.

TIAGo can also detect objects previously marked with a special label, such as keys or mobile phones, and help the person in bedtime, such as tucking her up or helping her get into bed, “to preserve the dignity of the person,” explains PAL Robotics ‘ director of communication, Judith Viladomat.

The user can also teach the robot to develop new functions because, according to its creators, it is “very easy to program because one of the goals is that everyone can use it.” The robot’s price varies from € 20,000 to € 60,000 depending on its components, but Ferro emphasizes that “you have to lower the robots ‘ price so everyone can have one at home.”
